Equality is both a journey and a destination in the material world, isn’t it? The Oxford Dictionary defines equity as the quality of being fair & impartial. It defines equality as the state of being equal, especially in status, rights, & opportunities. Synonyms for both: fairness, impartiality, justice. So, equity is the quality by which we arrive at the state of equality. It’s given that we are each unique & that “equal” does not imply “identical”. When Baha’u’llah & Abdu’l-Baha say women & men are equal in the sight of God, they mean we are of equal value in the world. Abdu’l-Baha’s simile of women & men as two wings of the bird of humanity that must be equally represented in the world, expresses this ideal.

I can more easily digest that men and women are of equal societal value in the evolution of the species or of of equal spiritual value in the sight of God. Either of these definitions puts all of us on the path of maximizing our potential. We must all be cognizant of the fact that equality is a journey not a detination, because a judgement of destination success requires skills that none of us have, or could potentially agree on.
