The former is the “selfish” approach that can make everyone worse off, the latter is the more altruistic approach.

I admit I still hate them, but would rather rise above it. Only hating the sin itself should help; the word “hate” is already loaded with feeling, but directing it away from people is a step up. I hardly ever hear “deplore” these days, but it has plenty of power while changing the tone from anger to grief.

I do not hate them, but I fear them. Is this a bias I need to overcome? How could I overcome it without giving in to them?
