This was not all hearts and flowers, peace and love — not that I have anything against ANY of these sweet and necessary things. I’m sure his questioner, though, was surprised to have a guest comment that the British Empire was lacking a few garments (cf. “the Emperor has no clothes”; surely he was expecting praise and wonderment at the great advancement at the “centre of the world”, London. Truth-telling without name-calling or vindictiveness. Great collection of quotes!
